CHAPTER SIXTEEN
NEIA
Sai paced around the steps of the bathhouse. Heâd sat with Lira for a few minutes, but had since given that up. Now, his eyes darted to where Shaan and Lennox sat together, a scowl tensing his features. Lira remained beside Elisa, laughing at something Orman said. Luz had volunteered to do a final pass around the perimeter before any of us went to sleep, although Orman had already assessed the area with his magic. In the distance, Shaan leaned forward to kiss Lennox, and Sai froze as shadows poured out of him and curled around his feet.
I remembered the night in Landre when Elisa said she thought all fairies had Atallas. I wasnât sure we had the magnetic, deadly attraction Sai had with Lira or Shaan apparently still maintained with Lennox, but I thought we had something as deep and meaningful. She was my center, my light. Listening to her laughter and the gentle comments she interspersed amid the groupâs banter made me realize there was good in the world, if only in this woman whoâd chosen to give her heart to me. I shuddered with the confusion of how she picked me of all the fucking beings in the world. I was nothing compared to her beauty and radiant lightâa short-tempered human with a history of theft. She didnât see me that way, though. I longed to become the best of everything for her sake and that meant gathering the heart stones so I could turn into a fae. This side trip of chasing after the mapâs directions might have annoyed me, except I knew how much it meant to Sai.
Orman pulled out a tumbler made of the same ivory stone as the rest of the city. "Look what I found. Anyone willing to play a game?"
"What is that?" I asked.
He rattled the cup and dice spilled out, unfamiliar marks carved into the sides. One landed with a symbol familiar in any language on the top. Ishir leaned back, crossing his arms as he stared at the skull carved into the die, its eyes dark and hollow.
"You found dice with the symbol for death on them in Kali's city and you want to play with them?" I hissed.
Orman shrugged. "Pass a few minutes of time."
"Getting yourself killed? I thought you were the suspicious one of the bunch?"
"Yeah, well..." He stretched his legs out so his boots almost reached me, and I drew my legs in tighter. "I've also not slept in about three days, so my judgment is a bit impaired."
I rolled my eyes. "So play some unknown game in a fucking haunted cavern in the city of a goddess you don't even patronize. Best way to deal with exhaustion, clearly."
He gave me an eye roll of his own. "Well, I'll count you out," he said before turning to face Elisa. "How about you, mate?"
My mouth flew open, then I shifted to glowering at Orman. Yes, just fucking drag Elisa into this stupidity. Elisa chuckled, wrinkling her nose and blending her freckles together.
